Sealing washers serve both plumbing and automotive systems, but the requirements differ greatly between the two. Understanding these differences helps you pick the right washer for the job.
In plumbing, sealing washers need flexibility and water resistance. Rubber washers are most common here because they compress easily and create watertight seals. They're perfect for faucets, toilets, and pipe connections.
In automotive systems, however, sealing washers must withstand high heat, pressure, and chemicals like fuel or oil. That’s where bonded sealing washers or PTFE washers shine. They maintain their integrity in extreme conditions and ensure leak-proof performance under stress.
Also, installation differs. Plumbing washers often pair with hand-tightened fittings, while automotive sealing washers are compressed under torque, often using a wrench or impact tool.
Know your application before selecting a sealing washer. What works for a kitchen tap won’t hold up in a car engine. Each type is designed to meet specific demands—and choosing the right one ensures long-lasting performance.
